A Fig and a Biscuit

I was surprised  by the flood of emotion that washed over me by the simple act of slicing a fig.

Belonging, important, safe, happy is how I felt plucking ripe figs from the huge fig bush in my mammie's backyard by the hen houses.  Her given name was Emmie but she was called Emma by adults and mammie by the grandchildren.  How beautiful and whole I felt with her.

I placed my ripe fig inside a homemade buttermilk biscuit like a jewel in cloth.  Each bite was full of memory.

I heard a sound like a large bird near the window.. Looking for a bird I was surprised to see this chipmunk on the woodpile just outside our bedroom window.

On the Ninety-Fourth and Last Day of Summer

I know one thing for absolutely sure, I am a blessed woman.  I wasn't sure if I would have something  to share on each day of the "Days of Summer".  I live a pretty basic no frills life. I found there is something in the every day. Flowers to bring in for the table.  A deer that visits the back yard.  The high pitched laughter-squeals of grandchildren playing with one another. Fingers turning blue from picking blueberries.  Remembering how to play hop-scotch and how to do the hokey-pokey.  Clothes to hang on the line.  A bounty of fresh vegetables, fruits and herbs from our garden. The earth smell of whole wheat dough as it is kneaded. Walking barefoot on the cool grass. The whirring sound of window fans day and night.  Watching humming birds, bumble bees and butterflies enjoy the flowers all summer long.  Short conversations with neighbors. Weddings. New babies. Summer birthdays. "Camping" in the backyard making s'mores. Sitting in the sun drinking iced tea.  Doc Watson playing and singing  on a Friday evening just down the street. An evening listening to  Gillian Welch.   Most of all ,and oh so wonderful, were the days spent in Georgia, Virgina, towns throughout North Carolina and right here at home with precious family and friends. I am grateful.

If you haven't visited this summer, please feel free to share in The Days of Summer by looking under Summer 2011.
